hit me baby one more time

The rumors are true, there is yet another massive hurricane coming towards Florida called Ivan. Atleast Ivan sounds scarier than Frances. Seriously, who name a natural disaster Frances...that's not scary at all. Someone needs to have a list of non-scary names at hand at the National Weather Service offices so that this doesn't happen again. Anyway...hurricane number two in my first week of living in Miami. I'm starting to take this personally. All I have to say is that right now I am in the mood for a fight, so bring it Ivan.
Other than hurricanes, I have had lots of small adventures in Miami. We have spent time on the beach (which is awesome). I have completely moving into my new house. Thoughts on the house will follow becuase I have a lot to say about it. I have to work at being positive about it so I'm not going to write about that now. I started my new job as the director of the Community Music School. I think that I'll really like the job, although it too comes with complications. I've met tons of cool people and learned a little more about my neighborhood. Last night my roomies and I walked about a mile to Yambo's for dinner. It's this awesome Nicaraguan diner that is like a tacky roadside stand...but it rocks!! Good food fast and cheap...just the way I like it. So even though there are a lot of things that I can whine about right now I'm trying to be positive and productive. I'll whine later I'm sure.
Those of you who are in Cincy I miss you like crazy. I keep feeling like I am on vacation and that I'll be back home soon. I can't write about it or I will start crying. More later.

  • Juliet, Matt here. What you said about "Those of you who are in Cincy....or I will start crying." I totally know what you mean. I got into Honduras yesterday, and right now, I just want to sit down in a corner and start balling, but I feel like I cannot or am not allowed to. You and I have to just get into the mindset that we are going to live as citizens in our respective cities/countries for a while. Today, after I finished my first day at the clinic here, I laid down to take a nap, and I actually started to plan how I could get a cab, go to the airport, and fly home. However, what we are doing is unusual and takes guts, and I think that we have it in the both of us to do great things where we are. E-mail me and let me know how things are going. I will get online whenever I can, but do not know when that will be.
    Hasta luego!

  • I assume that you were talking to me, John. Well, if you were, I tended to drink at least one, sometimes two per day. I dig the cold flavored drinks. Well, keep it real in Cincy, homes!

  • Alright everyone. This is officially announcing the start of "The Honduran Chronicles" at mattrickert.blogspot.com. It is still under construction, but I suggest that every few days that you check back, because there will be weird, wild, wacky stuff! Singing apes! Dancing elephants! Explosions! And the chance to win ONE MILLION DOLLARS!!! Don't miss out!*

*All of the following may not come true. Apes, elephants, explosions, and the million dollars was all an attempt the author to get people to visit my website. Please do!

  • JUUULLLIIIIEEETTT! I don't want to make you cry, but I miss you! I feel like things are going crazy right now and you're my friend who helps me in these times. I would have totally called you like 5 times in the last week to go somewhere, eat something, and LAUGH a ton!!! BUT, please don't let the fact that you just happen to be in Miami stop all of this, maybe i could call you and we could both go to say . . . Target and just pretend we're there together. Anyway, I will try and call you soon. And fight Ivan with all you've got!

  • Juliet,

I feel your pain...more than you know. One of my best friends is enrolled in medical school in Grenada. The entire island was smashed by Ivan. They were lugging buckets of ocean water to manually flush the toilet. She had about a fistfull of food per day for three days. No students died, but plenty of locals did...one washed up on shore.

She sat huddled in intense heat and rain with students she didn't know praying to stay alive. She was able to contact her family once. And ther eshe sat as the governments of other countries (Canada, Taiwan, Trinidad, etc.) all began to evacuate students from their countries. The US FINALLY did. She made it out with one suitcase...and she is finally with her parents.
